Statement from CEO in response to NHS England and NHS Improvement's letter to general practice and CCGs about preparations for a COVID-19 vaccination programme.

11 Tach 2020

Responding to NHS England and NHS Improvement 's letter to general practice and CCGs about preparations for a COVID-19 vaccination programme, John Barwick, Chief Executive of the Health and Care Professions Council, said:

"Once a potential vaccine for COVID-19 is authorised for use, the NHS must use all the resources available to maximise the impact and effectiveness of the vaccine roll-out.

"The NHS has recognised the role that primary care has to play, but it must also involve other health and care professionals already able to administer prescription-only medicines, through either Independent Prescribing rights or Patient Group Directions.

"Of course, further details on any vaccination programme are needed. However, by using the full range of professions, who have the right knowledge, training and experience to administer vaccines, we can swiftly and efficiently reach those who need it most, saving further lives and protecting the NHS."
